Contrary to their name, French bulldogs originated in England, not France, in the late 18th century [5]. They were bred by crossing English Bulldogs with smaller dogs, creating a miniature version of the bulldog that was popular among lace-makers in Nottingham England [2][3]. These late 18th century lace-makers were mostly local artisans who had learned the craft of knitting lace by hand or using a frame invented by William Lee of Calverton, Nottinghamshire [6][7]. Where French Bulldogs Got Their Name
[continued from above] As their work was replaced by machines in the industrial revolution of the 19th century, many of them lost their livelihoods and faced poverty and hardship. Some of them moved to France with their dogs, where they found a new market for their pets and their lace [7]. Others joined the Luddite movement, a secret organization of textile workers who protested against the mechanization of their industry by destroying the machines and factories [7][8]. Some of them also migrated to other parts of England or abroad, looking for new opportunities and jobs [10].
These workers found that French people loved these small, snub-nosed dogs, and gave them the name French Bulldogs [2]. They soon became fashionable companions for artists, celebrities, and even royalty [1].
